Happy New Year! - January 4, 2011

Thanks to everyone who came to my 2 shows Morris County First Night- we had two packed houses. And apologies to those who were turned away at the door after we filled up. We had a fantastic time, and Joe was his usual excellent Klingon self. The show was written up in the Morristown Green newspaper:

My resolution is to stop reading the comments section on the Yahoo news articles. I should save a lot of brain cells just making that one change.

Hope your new year is great.

My book is written up in the NJ Star ledger today - January 2, 2011

What's up at Carla U - August 16, 2010

Hey friends!
Well there's big doin's here at Carla U. I have just completed what I hope are the last edits on my manuscript. My book should be out in Feb. or March 2011. It's a collection of humorous (and hopefully helpful) essays about surviving chronic illness- and the health care system.

While we're waiting for the last pieces to fall into place with the book (graphics and all that), I'll be out and about singing silly songs. At the Philly Folk Fest, we've got a killer humor workshop lined up: me, Deirdre Flint, Adam Brodsky, Butch Ross, and Barry Rabin!

Speaking of humorous songwriters, last month, John Forster and I taped an interview about writing humorous songs for XM radio that will be aired sometime this fall. I'll keep ya posted.

Arm update: Been getting physical therapy, and it's helping a lot. Clever how they lure you in at the beginning of each session with heating pads and massage, then after you're all relaxed they get to wailing on your spine. Diagnosis: too much typing and guitar playing. Well, I'm willing to cut back on the typing.

Odd/ true: While struggling in his standup career, Rodney Dangerfield sold aluminum siding to make ends meet. "Reverend" Jim Jones sold monkeys door to door. So, following my 6-week stint of intensive book editing, I'm really grateful to be resuming teaching guitar lessons 2 days a week...

free new song- this week only - July 30, 2010

This week only, go to the Fump and get a free download of a new song from... me!

What's up at Carla U - July 13, 2010

Here's what I got planned for the rest of July here at Carla U:
1) deal with my arm tumor
2) finish my book!
3) do some gigs

What? Tumor? I didn't tell you I had a tumor? What I specifically have is (new word) an enchondroma. That's when part of your bone turns back into cartilage. (Incidentally it took me 5 tries to spell cartilage. Must be French or something). Yet enchodroma- easy to spell. They're very common and usually benign. I get hopefully only one more test- radioactive dye! Stand back! Chances are, no surgery, just keep an eye on it. But it took me 6 appointments to get to this point. Even more tries than it took to spell cartilage.

What? Book? I didn't tell you I was writing a book, either? Well, I've had ideas for a book for years, and there's nothing like a book contract and a deadline to make you get off your butt and start writing it. In reality, I find myself spending quite a but of time *on* my butt at the desk, but you know what I mean. We're doing the (I hope) final edits now, then the graphic artist works her magic and then I don't know what else, since this is my first real book, but bottom line is sometime early next year, there will be copies of my collection of sometimes humorous and hopefully helpful essays about dealing with chronic illness. Stay tuned for progress reports.

What? gigs? I didn't mention those either? What is wrong with me? I haven't had the radioactive dye yet, can't blame it on that. I'm playing in Rockville MD (just a little north and west of DC) with the fabulously smart and funny John Forster July 27. He's really smart and funny, and a fine musician. We've got a duet or 2 planned, and I'm going to read an essay from my book!

I may be playing in Massachusetts in August with the very funny Grant Baccioco. Stay tuned, and please tell your friends about Rockville- Gonna be a fun night!

What's up at Carla U - July 1, 2010

Hey howdy hi!
Well here's what's new around here:

I decided to take the month of July off from teaching guitar to catch up on some writing. Well, alright and I have to go to the oncologist. But I expect it to turn out to be no big thing. And then...

My manuscript for my book landed back on my desk, and I will be hard at work over the next few weeks working on the final (I hope) edits. Well, I wanted to catch up on some writing!

Just before that arrived, I was cooking up some new parodies and mash-ups that I hope to start recording later this year. I won't say more- I want you to be surprised by them.

The gig at the Seagull's Nest at Sandy Hook NJ was nice. So nice, I'm going back next week! From that vantage point on the deck, you can see both the ocean and the inlet on the other side of the island, and every night they have a sunset tribute.

Later this month (7/27) I'm splitting a bill with the delightful JohnForster in Rockville, MD.
Here is one of his songs.

What's up at Carla U - June 15, 2010

The latest at Carla U is this:
- Had a fantastic time at Geek Talk last week. They are in Reston, VA and they meet monthly to discuss "geeky" topics such as Star Trek, Star Wars, the Big Bang Theory, or on some occasions (such as last week), for a geeky house concert (me). Then everyone plays all sorts of board games all afternoon and evening. And Gwen is a fantastic cook. Or rather, chef. If you live in the DC area, and like to hang around smart interesting people and play party or board games, well by all means, get on their list and make some awesome new friends. If I lived closer, i'd be there every month. geekconcert@gmail.com (Dave and Gwen, tell 'em I sent ya!)

- taking a week to visit my family in South Carolina. It's hot and humid and I love it! Not only that, perfect strangers strike up conversations with you, and when they bump into you they say "excuse me." Wow, have I missed that.

- Later this month I'm doing a background/ cover tune gig at a restaurant on the beach in NJ. I started out in Clemson in 1995 doing these kinds of gigs, and I love making music outdoors, especially by the beach, so I'm looking forward to an evening of regaling strangers with Eagles and Beatles tunes (this crowd likes the Classic rock. In one more decade, that music will be oldies, but right now it's classic rock).

- In late July I've got a double bill with John Forster. He's really talented and smart, so I'm hoping it leads to more double bills with him.

- Headed to a science fiction convention in late July in Pittsburgh. Joe will also be there. We're both doing concerts. I've been working on a few new song parodies, and I'll be premiering them there. I have no idea if they're funny or not. You never know until you get to try them on humans. My dog is not a great test audience- she loves everything I do.

What's up at Carla U - May 16, 2010

The one woman show was a success! I premiered a short (20-minute) version at the festival as sort of a toe-in-the-water test, and it went well, so I'll be expanding it to an hour. I expect that's going to take me a while to write (and memorize). I'm sure my neighbors are enjoying watching me walk around the block talking to myself. I should stick a bluetooth in my ear so they think I'm on the phone.

A week later, we pulled off a recital for all my guitar students in Westfield, and everyone did really well. Most of them it was their first time on stage playing guitar, and you can only say that once (well you can keep saying it, but it's only true once). We even had guitar-shaped cake at intermission.

The next day I was in Connecticut sharing a bill with the very funny, very smart Dan Hart. I *love* his songwriting. I wish we were neighbors!

And now, I am finally sitting here at home today with enough time on my hands to walk the dog and update my website. Until I choose my next big project...

Live From Outer Space charts at #14 on Folk DJ! - October 3, 2009

"Live From Outer Space," is the #14 album for September on the Folk DJ charts, and I am the #17 artist. "Duet with a Klingon" has been especially popular with the DJs, as has "Scrambled Eggs."

Archon 33 - October 3, 2009

So I'm music guest of honor at Archon, a science fiction convention in the St. Louis area. Having a fine time.

Kicked off the convention at opening ceremonies by playing my Star Wars song (The Force) in front of Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew, the 7'3" man who portrayed Chewy in all 6 movies). I'm still intact, so I guess Chewy has a sense of humor. Or at least some restraint.

One of my high school nicknames was Ewok. I had a lot of thick long hair. I guess that's better than being nicknamed Chewbacca. I did not inform Chewy of this, as he says his chosen olympic sport would be Ewok tossing.

This convention has quite a reputation at the hotel. I was asked to sign a responsibility agreement when I checked in, promising not to hold room parties and to act "in a mature fashion" when at the hotel. Fortunately, that agreement does not extend to the convention center, when the events are held. Otherwise I would have sung a very short concert.

The music events don't have much
of a reputation within the convention, whose program book announced that this year's convention would feature an "honest-to-goodness" music track, "though goodness has very little to do with it."

So if anyone's worried about me getting a fat head from being invited to be guest of honor at 3 conventions in the course of one month, rest assured, it won't happen anytime soon. The universe is keeping me in my place.

Conventions! - September 21, 2009

I'm just home from a long fabulous trip that involved a medical convention (for patients), a filk convention (science fiction music convention), a folk venue, and a general interest science fiction convention, with 2 days of sightseeing on the Pacific Coast Highway squeezed in. And lunch with Dr. Demento.

I haven't had much sleep so excuse the typos.

The Myositis convention was wonderful. A gathering for patients with a rare autoimmune disease, it is often the first time many of the attendees have ever met anyone else with the same diagnosis. I was the kickoff presenter, and I sang songs and talked about keeping a sense of humor and removing blame and shame from our situation. Wonderful bunch of people, and a very meaningful day for me.

Conchord was the "filk" convention in Woodland Hills (L.A. area) where I was guest of honor. A small but very charming music convention, they sang me a birthday dirge to the tune of volga boatman. It's a must-hear. They treated me wonderfully, and I was delighted to hear some great new songs from Kathleen Sloan and to finally hear Kathy Mar.

Highlights on California's hwy 1 include going under the golden gate bridge for a very strange view of it, and checking out the park on the south side of the bridge. the one of the north side is also very cool. There is a beach made entirely of pebbles somewhere on that highway.

We saw some folks doing what I guess is called para=boogie-boarding? parasurfing? You use a kite-like sail to propel you along the water on a small surfboard. We hiked into a state park and saw some giant redwoods, and did the 17-mile drive at Pebble Beach (didn't see any beaches made of pebbles at the place actually called pebble beach, a golf resort area full of pricey mansions and a nature reserve). On "bird rock," there are bunches of sea lions and seals. Very stinky, but supremely cool. I have pictures.

Finally, we landed at Fencon, a general interest science fiction convention in Dallas, where I was one of the guests of honor, along with Paul Cornell, Lois McMaster Bujold, and Keith R A DeCandido. There were many other guests, including Tom Smith, Luke Ski, and the dashing and talented Joe Giacoio.

I was at the very first Fencon in 2004, and I have to say I *love* the programming there. A great mix of writing, music, art, costumes, and extremely well-run. It feels like a party, but without the guy with the lampshade on his head. Oh wait, there was one of those at the masquerade. If you've never been to a science fiction convention, this is a great first one to try. About 700-800 attendees, it's not too crowded, but plenty going on. www.fencon.org
I'm home (for now) and back to my 2 days a week of guitar students, my dog, and some fruits and vegetables. I've had enough road food!

The New Live CD is here! - August 18, 2009

Recorded live in concert at the XM radio performance theater last summer, "Live From Outer Space" is here!

Great CD if you want to get your mind off your troubles (unless your trouble is with Klingons- or WalMart).

There are 31 tracks (I separated the comedy bits and song intros from the songs):
- chatter (audience before concert)
- intro (Mary sue introduces me)
* Let it Go
- Star War fans?
* The Force Is the Force
- Bob's wedding
* My Love
- Joe Wants a Song
* I hope you’re happy (PG 13)
- The Scooter store
- The Klingon Language
* Duet With a Klingon (live, featuring my husband, Joe, as the Klingon)
* Bad Song Ideas (PG 13)
* Big Hit Medley
- Dr Demento
* One Good Song
- Music or Lyrics First?
* Scrambled Eggs
- North vs. South... Carolina
- Making Gramma Laugh
* It’s Never Polite to Ask a Girl How Old She Is
- Tombstones
- Coffee Enemas
- WalMart Comes to Clemson
* We Don’t Need a Walmart
- Dating for Dummies
- Me Neither
- How to Become a Folksinger
* If I Had the Copyright (The F word Song- bleeped)
* Duet with a klingon- studio cut
- Anyone?

* = song. The other tracks are comedy bits or song intros.

Two tracks have some slightly child-inappropriate humor, but the rest is safe. Just cover your ears, kids, during tracks 9 and 13. wink wink.

The favorite tracks of DJs so far (as of 9/21/09) are "Duet with a Klingon" featuring Joe Giacoio and "It's Never Polite to Ask a Girl how Old She Is." Well, you jut never know what they'll play, do you?

I had great engineers, so the sound quality is fantastic. And a really talented illustrator- Debbie Ohi- so the graphics are awesome.

Chet Atkins Convention - July 13, 2009

Well another year at the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society Convention has come and gone. What started as a gathering of 100 diehard Chet fans in a hotel conference room who had Chet as their honored guest play for them has now turned into an enormous gathering of more than 1000 guitarists, including the giants of Fingerstyle guitar form all over the world.

If you think you're a hot guitar player, come to the Chet convention and find out otherwise.

This year's 4-day event paid homage to the recently departed Jerry Reed and Buster B Jones, in addition to the annual tribute to Chet.

There was the usual blown-out-of-your chair experience with Tommy Emmanuel and Thom Bresh, the lightning fingers of Richard Smith and Jim Nichols, the always wonderful arrangements of John Knowles, and Guy van Duser, the return of Frank Vignola and band (a personal favorite). Earl Klugh showed up this year, and Jerry Reed's band was there playing for his tribute.

There were lots more, but there were 4 or 5 stages and only one of me.

As for me, I had my 3rd annual spot in the "Licks and Laughter" round, along with Todd Hallawell, Stephen Bennett, Andy Wahlberg, and the legendary Paul Craft ("It's Me Again Margaret" and "Drop Kick Me Jesus"). Paul premiered a brand new song during that round about the Nashville Music biz called "It's a hit with a Capital 'S'."
I hear rumors that there's a video of the round. I was accompanied by Italian guitarist Daniele Bazzani and Todd Hallawell on "guitjo" (6-string banjo in guitar tuning) on one of my songs.

This was the 25th annual convention, and it's normal for every square inch of the lobby and convention area to be filled with music til 4 or 5am every day of the convention.

I started attending in 1995. I haven't gone every year, but I did go to 4 or 5 of them while Chet was still around, and performing and signing autographs. He is still well-loved and much imitated.

Leftovers 2.0 CD is here! - July 10, 2009

CARLA ULBRICH: Leftovers

7/12/09:
*Now available on itunes*

It's finally here! Exactly one year after the very limited release of Leftovers 1.0, Leftovers 2.0 is now available.

This rare tracks CD is for my longtime fans, who will appreciate the oddball nature of the songs and the oddball album concept: 7 previously unreleased, offbeat songs that didn't fit the previous projects, 1 previously released single, and alternate versions of 4 previously released songs.

There will be no big CD release party. And it will not be going out to radio. It's just something a little special and strange i felt like doing, and I'm keeping it fairly low-profile.

There will only be 100 copies of this CD printed. After those are gone, it will be available digitally only (e.g., on itunes, etc.). So, if you want a "real" copy of "Leftovers," do not delay.
*note: as of 10/17/09 this CD is sold out. It is available for digital download on itunes or at www.cdbaby.com/carlau5
Here's the song list!

1) What If Your Girlfriend Was Gone (twang version with country band)
2) Boy Wonder (pop version- big wall of sound)
3) Open the Car Door (parody of Over the Rainbow)
4) If I Had the Copyright (sound effects version, WLRN)
5) We Don't Need a WalMart with Bob Malone
6) Snickers (spoof on the commercial)
7) W is Listening (wiretapping song)
8) If I Did It (OJ song)
9) The Nth Day of Xmas (parody, about algebra)
10) Guardian Angel (Nashville version)
11) Put It On the List (parody, about groceries)
12) What If Your Butt Was Gone (rap version) with Mark
Johnson

easy way to tell which version of Leftovers is which:
1.0 has a parental advisory on the front and includes the Klingon Duet. 2.0 does not have either.
